Dr. Reiss is a graduate of Swarthmore College and The George Washington University School of Medicine. He received his post-doctoral training in general psychiatry and behavioral genetics from Stanford University, and his child and adolescent psychiatry training from Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Since 1982, Dr. Reiss has worked extensively, in both the research and clinical settings, with individuals affected by developmental, genetic and neuropsychiatric disorders. His areas of expertise are in describing the behavioral and cognitive profiles of individuals with these disorders, the use of structural and functional brain imaging techniques to uncover and elucidate neural mechanisms, and linking genetic, neurobiological and neurobehavioral data to more fully understand the neurodevelopmental pathways leading to cognitive and behavioral disability in these conditions.

Dr. Reiss has served on initial review groups for the NIMH, NICHD and NINDS including serving as Chairman of an NIMH Study Section on Child Psychopathology and Treatment. He is a reviewer for numerous scientific journals crossing the fields of genetics, neuroscience, psychology and psychiatry and serves on the Editiorial Board of two major journals in the field
